Training





The Chapter delivers (on a fee basis) a 12-hour basic dementia care training program to long term care providers. Entitled Person Centered Care: Skill Building for Caregivers of People with Dementia, the training includes:

  • current information on research regarding the causes and progression of dementia
  • the care needs of people who are affected
  • available treatments, environmental issues
  • behavioral management
  • state-of-the-art caregiver interventions

Intended for a multidisciplinary audience, this basic training is recommended for all levels of staff in long term care settings, including:

  • nurses
  • Certified Nurse Assistants
  • social workers
  • administrators
  • activities professionals
  • home health aides
  • maintenance and food service staff
  • physical, speech and occupational therapists

Fee:
Thanks to funding from the Virginia Department of Social Services, the fee only $10 per person for the first 1,000 qualified Virginia applicants through June, 2002.

For all others, the fee is $70 per person (full 12 hours of training).

Arrangements can be made to bring this essential training to long term care settings. A minimum of 20 persons per session is required. A maximum of 30 persons will be trained in any one session. Two or more organizations may jointly host the training.

The Chapter also delivers (on a fee basis) a 6-hour Dementia Care Specialist (DCS) training program to health care providers. The training addresses:

  • Alzheimer's and other dementias vs. "normal" aging
  • Management of difficult behaviors and accomplishing personal care
  • Techniques to aid in communication
  • Family's perspective on caregiving issues
  • Professional's perspective on caregiving issues and on-the-job stress reduction

Offered in a one-day (6 hour) course, the training cost (including training manual) is:

  • $40 per person

    or

  • $35 per person (for organizations that send 5 or more staff to the training session)
